This image is a watercolor conceptual painting of a Greek temple done by an unknown student sometime between 1917 and 1942. The painting shows a front view of the temple with its columned porch, doorways, windows, stone carvings, architectural moldings, peaked roofs surrounded by a railing with statues and stonework and steps leading down to a pavilion and a lake. The pavilion consists of columns topped with a roof and a statue and contains a brazier. The temple is surrounded by trees and landscaping with mountains in the background and bushes between the temple and the lake. The temple is placed with framing art showing architectural details including a corner of the roof with its architectural molding and stonework, a column, a floor plan, a statue, a pole topped by a dish holding flames, a staff, grapes, a wreath, a shield and a mask. In the upper right corner are two labels which read: "School of Architecture, Architectural Renderings, RG 457, Original Number 74, 'Study of Ionic Order'" and "73." The painting is in poor condition with the entire left lower corner missing, major edge wear and numerous tears and creases and is encapsulated. |
